AND CONSIDER . . .

A U T O   R A C I N G

"Morristown Airport" now leased by the TOWN OF MORRISTOWN, NJ
touches the eastern border of Morris Township

There were automobile races there from 1945 to 1948
on a small oval track that raced T.Q. midget autos.

From JUNE 1950 until OCTOBER 1955 a 1/2 mile dirt oval racetrack at

"SORANNO PARK"

was known by the name of

"M O R R I S T O W N   S P E E D W A Y"
(actually located in Morris Township, NJ - near Morris Plains, NJ)

It was located on the site of the present COLGATE-Palmolive-owned MENNEN CORPORATION -
between East Hanover Avenue, MLK and Cory Road near the Whippany River.  It is the site of the present MORRIS COUNTY PARKS DEPARTMENT'S INDOOR ICE SKATING RINK.
A half century earlier, wealthy "Wall Streeters" had created the "WHIPPANY RIVER CLUB" on the site.
It had been the land for grazing polo ponies with events for horse racing, too.

[ Anyone having old snapshots of these raceways, please leave a e-mail-id and msg in my Morristown.org
"guestbook" so that I can give copies to the NewJerseyDIRTTRACKS.com, and show them here, too ! ]

But in the early 1950's, many now-famous automobile racecar drivers built there reputations here and at other dirt racetracks in New Jersey and in the Northeast - and other of the many tracks in states throughout America.

There was a well attended 100-mile race on August 24, 1951 with DAN BAILEY and  and  FRANK MUNDY, both driving 1951 Studebakers, finished 14th and 23rd out of the original 44 entries.

TIM FLOCK, LEE PETTY and BUCK BAKER won races at the Morristown, NJ Speedway.
