This "PAGE !"  is dedicated to GEORGE  WASHINGTON, to the Continental Congress, Colonial Militias and George Washington's Continental Army, which faced the  world-class naval forces of a german and english-speaking "British" Monarch, King George III, whose father and grandfather had not learned the English language and had partially ruled the British Isles from  the Hanover, Germany area.  GEORGE III used  British and Hessian German troops to try  enforcement of harsh tax laws, such as The Stamp Act, The Townsend Act and The Tea Act.

As you probably know, G  E  O  R  G  E     W  A  S  H  I  N  G  T  O  N   rode to many places for USA Independence from arbitrary and arrogant demands from afar and from  TAXATION without REPRESENTATION !  Morristown became an important safe-place  from the dominating naval guns of his enemy.  New Jersey was the main "crossroads" for the major armies.  Washington's Morristown became a major "Military Capitol of the Revolution."

FROM WASHINGTON'S DIARY :
Two years before the war, GW traveled to where he would fight in future years !

GEORGE WASHINGTON FIRST CAME TO BASKING RIDGE and MORRISTOWN on
May 25, 1773 with his stepson John Parke Custis.
This was over four years before arriving here WITH HIS ARMY, Jan. 6, 1777.
And, yes, George Washington came to  "STRATEGIC MORRISTOWN " eight  times:

MAY 25, 1773 - two years before the war .... then, almost four years later, with the army.  He then stayed for about 5 months, as is often reported,
JAN. 6 1777 to MAY 28, 1777.  He also was here July 4 - July 11, 1777 and July 26, 1777 of the same year.   He returned again on June 3, 1779.
As often reported, he also returned
with the army for six months from
DEC. 1, 1779 to  JUNE 1, 1780,  and then again on Nov. 28, 1780.  Then, he also returned Mar. 24 to Mar. 28, 1782  with Martha after the victory at Yorktown, Virginia.  (Some of these dates need second-reference verification).

"THE TRIP" TO  MORRISTOWN  BEFORE THE WAR !
FROM WASHINGTON'S DIARY

TWO YEARS BEFORE THE WAR GW traveled to where he would fight in future years !

GEORGE WASHINGTON first came to Morristown on May 25, 1773 with his stepson John Parke Custis  -over four years before arriving here again with his army on Jan. 6, 1777.

The travel party departed Mount Vernon, Va. on May 10, 1773 and proceeded via Annapolis (they met Gov. Eden there).  Then they went north via Rockhall, Chestertown, Georgetown,  Md., New Castle and Wilmington, De., Chester, Pa. and Philadelphia, Pa. (where they met Gov. Penn).

At Philadelphia, George and John Parke Custis spent a few days at the Jockey Club, the Assembly, and went to a Ball.  Lord Stirling, who had visited Mount Vernon in January 1773, was a member of the Jockey Club.  He escorted John Parke Custis, George Washington and Major Robert Bayard on the trip northward into New Jersey.

On May 23, they departed from Philadelphia and traveled via Burlington, NJ (where they met "to be loyalist" Gov. Wm. Franklin).  They saw Trenton, NJ, Princeton, Boundbrook and finally, on May 24, arrived at Basking Ridge, NJ.  They lodged at Lord Stirling's Manor House at Basking Ridge near the Great Swamp.

[ Note: Originally, Lord Stirling was known as William Alexander, whose father, James fought for freedom of the press with John Peter Zenger ].

The next day, on May 25, the party stopped in at loyalist Peter Kemble's house, now on Route 202, just south of MorrisTown -  Peter Kemble was president of the royal council of New Jersey.

Washington's party then continued - through Morristown, NJ and via the King's Highway (?) on to ElizabethTown for lunch and then to the large village of New York, where Washington's stepson, "Jacky" Parke Custis, registered at Kings College, now Columbia University.

[ Note:  Custis booked a three room suite, a horse, a groom, a valet and was given access to the faculty dining room (spoiled kid?) ].

George Washington met and then dined with "the-to-be opposing General," Thomas Gage
[ General Gage had been Commander-in-chief of British troops in North America for 10 years.  He was going on leave to England; ( Note: he married Peter Kemble's daughter ). Gage was an acquaintance of Washington from French and Indian War days when GW had had two horses shot from under him and had four bullets pass through his clothing ].

In two years, in 1775, this "Governor and General," Thomas Gage would be the top British General opposing Washington "eyeball to eyeball" at Boston.

This journey was to be very informative to Washington. He began to "learn the NJ, PA territory"!

On May 31, 1773, Washington began his return home - he reconnoitered some of New Jersey and Pennsylvania when he returned home via Pavonia, NewArk, Perth Amboy, Brunswick, Princeton, Bristol and Philadelphia, Pa.  On June 4, he went to Lancaster, Pa. and then York Town, Pa. and on to Baltimore.  From there, he set out for his farm at Mount Vernon.

He was home again at 2 PM on June 8, 1773.  Soon after returning home to Mount Vernon, Patcy Custis, his stepdaughter, died suddenly at the dinner table, of an epileptic seizure.  John Custis then returned to Virginia.

In "days of old,"  things were "different."   Families with little education were without our "take it for granted"  paved roads, buses, trains, air flight, electricity and shower facilities - they were ruled by the rod - with control techniques of fear, public  hangings, the embarrassment in "stocks" in generally hostile and rugged surroundings.  What became of the kid with a sense of adventure, GW, who lost his father at age 11?

Washington became a rugged outdoorsman,  a people-person, who had respect for "The Creator" and "superiors".  He had many adventures and met persons of all  walks of life!  At the end, he gradually, then finally freed and provided education of slaves;  it was done with conviction in the face of surrounding opposition - read his will from the  University of VA. 200+ Year >> REMEMBRANCE !   Read parts of his diary here.
