FRANCIS HOPKINSON, a NEW JERSEY signer of The Declaration of Independence is credited with designing the first American flag with thirteen stars and stripes. His design was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

    Betsy's grandson spun the first set of tall tales.  His 1870 speech is now in the San Marino, CA  
    Huntington Library with approx. 20% about Betsy.  George Henry Preble's The Origin and History of 
    the American Flag discredited Canby's story.  Betsy did make military flags in Philadelphia.  Betsy 
    married several times and therefore had several last names.  The wise young lady soon moved to NJ !
