DEMOLITION
HERE is a letter to the editor on the topic of having a GW SCHOOL in Morristown, NJ
GEORGE AND MARTHA A similar letter sent SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 2002 to The Daily Record
Morristown should have a Washington School !Many are feeling a spirit of patriotism in these days of ongoing crisis. Take these moments to consider honoring one or two of our heroes. Morristown no longer has a school saluting the name of Washington.
The town has named their schools after Lafayette, Hamilton, Jefferson and at one time Washington, but the George Washington grade school has now been demolished, and the name of Washington is no longer on a school in "his" town.
I would hope that the mayor, council, and board of education would rectify this situation. One suggestion is to enhance the name of the County College at HQ Plaza by naming it MORRISTOWN WASHINGTON COLLEGE. That would salute the George and Martha of yesteryear, who put their lives on the line and who sacrificed greatly to give us our independence and hopefully our freedoms.
Our Morristown HIGH SCHOOL has served many surrounding towns through the years. The name-improvement would be a fitting way to honor a man and wife who got us started with a victory and a Constitution having a Bill of Rights. That Constitution has given stability and stature to our country and has been improved by sacrifices of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and others.
Many today could not pass a test on the adventurous lives of George and his faithful wife Martha, who wintered with the army every year. Do most know that George went to sea at age 19 and 20 near to South America? People are being erroneously taught through brochures and presentations that the first time that the Washington family came to Morristown was in 1777. Not so. He and stepson, John Parke Custis, arrived in 1773 before the war. George later came here with the army on January 6, 1777. Martha was here in 1777 and 1780.
On his first trip to Morris County, George went into the future enemy’s homes to ascertain the direction of passions and the opposition's strengths. Since it is seldom, if ever, taught correctly, here is a one liner sketch:
According to The Diaries of George Washington, in May and June of 1773, George Washington came to Basking Ridge and to the Kemble house at Mount Kemble just south of Morristown. On the journey, with the patriot Lord Stirling, to Morristown and New York, he met with several very powerful King George III loyalists:
They were: loyalist Governor William Franklin, (Benjamin’s loyalist son), Peter Kemble who headed the most pro-king group in this state, and finally with the loyalist Governor of Massachusetts/ General Gage, who after an eyeball to eyeball siege, would in early 1776 retreat from Washington’s siege of Boston.
With current history writers setting up new displays at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the emphasis is on "the negative" when it should be on liberty.
Let us again salute the ones who gave us our independence by naming a school after the WASHINGTONs.
